The Elbaites of the Gillette Quarry
This presentation looks at tourmaline crystals in general, then it examines a host of Gillette Quarry elbaites - only the second place in eastern North America to yield pocket elbaite crystals and still one of the few. It shows that they have a set of specific characteristics, including diverse color and terminal form, and associations with other minerals, that you can use to distinguish them from elbaites from other localities, both in Connecticut and around the world. For comparison, many other elbaites are shown, and crystals will be brought to the meeting as well.
